How do the Ascend Genetics' tests work?

Our tests are designed specifically to test for either the wild type or mutant form of a certain mutation. Outside of the mutations listed in our tests, we are not getting data from any other locations in your genome. We test for specific mutations in genes that have been shown in the published scientific database to be associated with certain traits related to diet and exercise.

How is my sample collected?
Ascend Genetics will send you a cheek swab which you will use to gently scrape the inner linings of your cheeks (painless and easy). This swab will then be ejected into a tube of special buffer sent to you. This tube (with the swab in it) will be mailed back to Ascend Genetics.

Do you need blood?

No. Very little DNA is needed for testing, so the genetic material from your cheek scrape is enough.

Normally your sample is destroyed after testing, unless you specifically request we store it for future testing.
What happens to my sample after testing?
Can you use my DNA to clone me?

No, this is not yet possible with current technology. Furthermore the amount of DNA needed would exceed what we have. Plus, what would we do with all of the clones?

NO. Your data will never be shared with anyone. Furthermore, all samples will be given a non-identifiable code that is used during testing so that your name and contact information is not identifiable with your sample. We take your privacy very seriously.

Will my data or DNA be shared with anyone?
Is shipping included in the cost of the testing?

Yes, Ascend will cover the cost to ship to you anywhere in the United States. For international customer, please inquire s the legality and logistics of sending DNA through the mail differrs from country to country, as well as shippping costs.

Health insurance can vary widely from person to person, so it may or may not be covered. It may be unlikely since our tests are classified as non-medical, non-clinical genetics tests. If you find your health insurance does cover the costs of our tests, we do not accept payment from insurance companies, so you would still have to pay out of pocket.

Is my test covered by my health insurance?
Does Ascend Genetics guarantee Ill lose weight and/or get in shape?

Our tests can give you information related to certain genes whose results may help you to tailor your diet and exercise regme, but you have to follow it. There is no easy way to get in shape, we are just trying to help you find the ideal path.
